Make Up lessons explained
There are usually a couple of hundred make up lessons taken up each term which is really great as we want the bubs to keep up their practice as much as possible. A comment we occasionally receive is that there is no availability when checking for a make up so we thought it worthwhile spending a little time to discuss the topic and explain how the system works.
Firstly, we are a very small school so make ups are not as easy to offer as large schools which will have multiple lessons and levels running simultaneously in a much larger, noisier environment, (which is why you chose a boutique school, right? ?). Most classes run full, so at the start of term there are pretty much zero makeups available. The magic starts to happen as people mark themselves absent in advance for things like Doctor appointments, holidays and such like. Obviously these are few and far between so you’d be lucky to score a makeup for your level weeks in advance.
The real effect happens the night before when carers may look at their baby who is “under the weather” and decides that swimming is a definite no-no the following day, or when a baby wakes up and is clearly unwell. The important thing to do here is mark your child absent as soon as possible because most carers will be looking for a make up around 7am to 11am when they are planning their morning/afternoon activities. It follows therefore that it’s fruitless in marking yourself absent an hour or so beforehand as realistically no-one is going to take that spot as there is insufficient time to prepare and travel. Note also that make ups are supposed to be for unavoidable absences primarily due to Covid symptoms and not for convenience.
We completely understand that emergencies crop up or you simply forget. To provide some context, there are around 400 “no shows” per term which translates to 400 unused lessons that COULD have been used as a make up! So next time you look for a make up, do ask yourself if you have ever marked yourself absent before ?.
